This hardcore outburst on the police is a symptom of my mental health condition known as PTSD. When the officer snuck up behind me, I was experiencing a cluster of PTSD symptoms known as “Hyperarousal.” Symptoms of hyperarousal include:
1. Feeling keyed up or on edge
3. Feeling more irritable or having outbursts of anger
5. Feeling constantly on guard or like danger is lurking around every corner
6. Being jumpy or easily startled
I lived with these torturous symptoms because of the roll I played in the drug war, my activism, and constant police retaliation. I recently suffered a raid, multiple arrests and losing my son at the time of this incident.
It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second changes in the body to help defend against danger or to avoid it.
My struggle with PTSD continues but I have managed to turn most of my Post traumatic stress into Post Traumatic Growth.
